Another startling statistic

At a conference near Phila. yesterday, a speaker repeated a stat that I've
heard/read several times in the last few years: Mowing a one-third acre lawn for
a summer causes as much air pollution as driving your car 14,000 miles.
I did a little back-of-the-napkin math, using my 30-mpg Saturn and a Zone 6
summer as a model. I'm at a loss to figure out how you can release the same
amount of air by burning three or four gallons of petrol, however inefficiently,
as you can by burning 470 or so, however efficiently. If you swap my Saturn
for a Hummer, the math gets even more unbelievable.
Anybody got a clue for me, or is this a canard in need of exposing?
