Interesting. As of the Sept/Oct. 2000 communique from RAFI, golden rice only provided 10% of the recommended daily requirements of vitamin A. One would have to consume 110-180 kilograms of golden rice per year to get the recommended daily amount. Will people have room for other foods that provide other nutrients? Did these people know how much they'd have to eat before they agreed to spend? I'll bet they were told the cost per pound, and not how many pounds they'd have to consume. Margaret Lauterbach
CONSUMERS VALUE GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS THAT DIRECTLY BENEFIT THEM
Consumers may be willing to pay a premium for certain genetically modified foods if they are told of the potential health benefits they may receive from eating those foods, according to a recent Purdue study. The findings also indicated that a marketing survey method called "cheap talk" can be used in mail surveys to yield more accurate results. Jayson Lusk, associate professor of agricultural economics and author of the study, used a mail survey to assess how much consumers are willing to pay for a genetically modified, or GM, food called golden rice. His paper appears in the November issue of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.
