Fred Hicks died Thursday

Those of you in the supply side will know of Fred Hicks of Hicks Nurseries on Long Island. Fred died on Friday about noon after a long illness.

For those of you who don't know, Hicks is the oldest US family owned garden centre - the Hicks family celebrated 150 years of continuous ownership and operation last year. Fred was responsible for rejuvenating the company and making it a retail leader as well as the largest on Long Island.

I've had the privilege of talking to him several times and he was always clear that his employees were the reason for his success and that involvement in the community was a necessity for a good business person. At every trade show or meeting, Fred was always surrounded by a crowd of people asking for advice and conversation.

The gardening industry lost a true friend this week although I'm sure Fred was proud that his son Steven continued operating the family business and tradition.
