Google Images is just a database of images that the google bots have found
on the web. Just because an image shows up in your results does not mean
that it is free for the taking. Actually you should assume that it is NOT
free, and, as per US Federal Copyright laws, the image is copyrighted.
Copyright automatically grants control over the reproduction of the images,
whether or not the author or web page says that it is.
I search web sites virtually all day in my search for new horticultural
photography, and I assure you that most images are not in the public domain,
as someone said. In fact all are copyrighted. The copyright owner may elect
to give the photos away - that is his or her choice. But we cannot assume as
much without risking liability.
The proper thing to do is simply contact the site owner and ask permission,
which often results in permission. We aware also, that many photos on many
sites are displayed by permission from someone else, or they are outright
stolen from another site. As professionals, we need to cover our bases and
other anatomy before ripping photos off the web.
