Re: Future locations of Symposium

Kathy:

I would like to add to Jo Ellen's very detailed response: In its
history GWA has wanted to schedule the symposium according to US geography.
One year, East Coast. One year, Central. One year, West Coast. That plan
has been recently thwarted by the process that Jo Ellen described. And
also, Canada (as representative of "the rest of the world") has also played
a big role in two of the last seven conferences.

Since I have served both on the GWA board and the recent local
arrangements committee, I can attest to the difficulty of putting all of the
pieces of the puzzle together. It's a long and arduous process of refining
the schedule made even more difficult because people need to eat and take
bathroom breaks. It's the eating aspect of this symposium that has become
the most difficult to plan, price, and afford. We have created this monster
where 700 people want to be served a minimum of 10 meals included in the
price of admission. It's a daunting task. Not every LAC can come up with
the sponsors necessary to bankroll it.

At whatever cost, you really need to make a commitment to come to
the conference. It is by far the most rewarding event in which a
professional garden writer could participate.

Thanks for your prompt reply, and it sounds like I blew it: it's going to be
a long time before it's as close to me as Valley Forge was.
