Re: Was: chili terror; Now: Aging Gardeners


Two years ago in May'05, despite a more serious stroke than her previous  
ones, Mama declared that she was going to plant her tomatoes herself   that year 
or die. She wanted to be sure that it was "done right". (I  have been planting 
them in my own garden, more or less the way she taught  me, almost 40 years.) 
She only missed one other year, the spring of '04,  but in '03 she did manage 
to get them in herself by holding onto her walker with  one hand.  However, 
in '05 it was just an impossibility, and she died that  summer at 96.  Life 
without her garden was, for her, just not worth  living...
