the fires
Debra,
It was so good to see your earlier e-mail and know that you were ok. I think
like many, I hated to ask my friends in San Diego, the Ventura area or up in
the mountains near Arrowhead, fearing what the answer might be.
Our next door neighbor and husband have a home up in Arrowhead and I finally
talked to her the other morning as she was leaving for work. Fortunately,
their home escaped damage.
Here in Riverside, we've been in between all the fires. Arrowhead and
Running Springs to the north and west of us, the Santiago fire northeast of us, and
the fires up north too far away to be significant. We have a granddaughter
and her husband who live in Valencia. Both are LAPD, and both were on duty
during the start of the fire, and they had a mandatory evacuation. So, with
their 7 month old baby, they went south to Newbury Park and moved in with their
Mother, our daughter, until the evacuation was lifted. They said later the fire
got within a mile of their home.
I've lived here in Southern California since the forties and this is the
worst fire season I've seen.
We had no damage anywhere here in Riverside, the smoke was never really bad,
and the ash falling was minimal.
