I chose to use a "Letter of Agreement" (it didn't say "Letter of
Agreement") which simply set out all of the above, after I could see
potential clients visually cringe when I said the word "contract." There
were also instances in which, if we wrote "contract" anywhere, then the
whole thing would have had to be reviewed by the legal department.

I think it all boils down to trust. If the client can't trust you to do a
professional job based on your portfolio, something is wrong with your
portfolio or your presentation. If you have a feeling you can't trust the
client, run for the nearest exit. You can't.

My husband, who has been a salesman his entire life, always talks about
managing expectations and I've found that to be the most important
element of any transaction. Think of everrything that has ever gone wrong
with any job and address it before you quote a price. Normal clients are
only unhappy when they don't get what they expected. If they don't, it's
your fault.
