Re: Margot Rochester

Margot Rochester has been in hospice care for pancreatic cancer. She was
with us in Portland at the GWA meeting but not feeling well.

Her friend, GWA member (and award winner) Marian St. Clair sent some of
Margot's friends, including me, this note on October 19th. All of us who
know Margot should send her cards and good wishes. Her address is in the GWA
directory. If anyone needs it but does not have it, contact me offline.

Marian said, "Dear Friends,

I drove to Columbia early this morning to sit a several hours with Margot.
Dick had spent the night and Sharon Thompson came in just before me, about 8
a.m. Margot's sons have gone home for a few days to catch up, so even
though Margot is not seeing visitors, a few friends are taking turns sitting
with her and Dick, and driving Dick back and forth to the hospital.

As you may already know, Margot's cancer is in the final stage and treatment
is not possible. She remains at the hospital and her care is now provided
by hospice.

Margot is very comfortable. She is on a 3 hour rotation for pain relief.
After she gets medication she sleeps for about an hour and then is more
wakeful. Her eyes are closed most of the time but she seems to know when
someone comes in the room as she nearly always opens her eyes and smiles to
greet them. In fact, she smiles a lot. You can tell she enjoys
conversation and lets you know with an expression or a hand movement that
she is listening. Tom, her son, started reading to her last week and her
friends have continued this practice, sharing favorite books and reading the
cards that arrive each day.

Margot's youngest granddaughters, Morgan and Margot, called while I was at
the hospital. She was thrilled and was able to speak a few words to both,
even telling Morgan, "I miss you, too."

It was a good morning. I'm sorry we will not have as many more as we
sh. -- Marian"
