Interesting thread. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Apple gear. I've been a PC type forever; my first laptop was a Grid, a real beast. 
But I recently splurged on an iMac or iBook Air, with the 11" screen; size, weight & portability were my main criteria. This little thing runs Windows, weighs less than 2.5 lbs, has a real keyboard, and I can deploy it on an airplane tray table even if the guy in front of me reclines his seat. Couldn't do that with my 15", 8-lb Dell. But it's well over the prescribed budget.
