RE: [GWL]: Beetles and Soil

Dear all,

You might not be surprised to learn that your tragedy has also affected everyone here in Italy - as well as probably everywhere else in the world. The Italians are also counting their missing and dead. With old links between New York and Italy, there are also many Italian-sounding names among the dead that 'may or may not be Italians'. Nobody knows. Apart from everything else, it's that sense of not yet knowing what has happened to so many people that continues to make us all despair.

All we can say is that our hearts are with you and your loved ones. "Forza" as they say here. "Strength".

To press on to list business:

I did introduced myself a while ago to the list. Since them, I have started a webseedpublishing site at

www.intriguinginsects.com and thought some of you would be interested enough to have a look at it. As a tempter, there's even a possible story there for a wildlife gardening writer. I wrote about 'Battling Beetles' and focussed partly on the UK's stag beetle. It's now endangered, but people in London are trying to help by building 'loggeries' in their gardens - places where the wood-boring larvae can burrow away to their hearts content. There's a link to a site that tells you all about loggeries (both 'real' and 'artificial'). There is an American species of beetles (Lucanus elaphus, I think, rather than the European L. cervus), so loggeries could be of use in the US / Canada.

If you like the site, please go to 'Free Update' in the left-hand column and sign up for my once-a-week (no more, I promise) email reminder of what's new.

Also, this is a bit off-list, does anyone out there have any leads for stories about Soil Improvement - especially developments for small scale farmers in developing countries? Perhaps you could contact me off list if you can suggest anything.

Thanks,

Peter McGrath
