Larry, it's a good thing people didn't go to the Internet for news of
the terror attack.
The Internet is a highway, NOT a broadcast medium. Its major weakness is
that it can't handle huge traffic, all headed for the same sites.
Here in Toronto, our neighbour who heard it on the radio ran in to tell
my mom who switched on the TV. I ran upstairs to reach cbc.ca -- and the
site was down. Those Web sources I could reach confirmed only that it
was happening.
However, cbc.ca later did a good job of sending updates every three
hours, which was a blessing to those of us who had to WORK, despite
everything.
That, by the way, is something the Internet probably does better than
any other medium. I can quickly scan the update and if nothing's new,
delete it and go back to work with only a few seconds of time wasted.
TV's great weakness is that the commentators try to keep you listening
by parading all kinds of boffins onto the screen, most of whom have no
real information. It's okay for a retired person to engage in that kind
of artificial excitement, but I would rather be gardening if I am not
working.
