Re: [GWL]: Queries and Stolen Ideas

Carol and Sheri are right--editors do cull ideas from queries and offer them
to other writers. Much as I appreciate Carol's apologia for editors, my own
experience shows that they sometimes do know exactly what they're doing. I
have more than once been asked by different editors to develop someone
else's idea. I don't believe they saw the practice as unethical, though,
certainly not as stealing, since ideas can't be copyrighted.
And we can't blame it all on the editors. Competition in this busines is so
cutthroat that many writers will do anything to get their work into print,
including accepting such assignments, doing work-for-hire and working for
little or no pay. Makes it hard to stand up for professional standards in
any part of the business, much less a professional pay scale.
