Re: [GWL]: Queries

The discussion about queries prompts me to introduce myself and offer an additional thought.

As a freelancer I contribute regularly on gardening topics to the Toronto Sunday Star and Ontario Gardener magazine. I also teach journalism part-time at my local community college.

I would agree with Carol's advice and also suggest that the opening paragraph of a query letter should "grab" the editor just as the first words of your story are written to hook your reader.   I suggest to my students that they write the first paragraph of  the proposed story and use it as the opening to their query letter. Then, go on to explain the outline of the idea and why it is right for the market being queried.

In this way, you both present your idea and demonstrate to the editor how well you can write.  This helps a new writer who is trying to break in without a lot of samples to include.
