Doreen, I used to do about 300 hours a year of
volunteer advice giving for our master gardeners assn. The questions were
usually highly seasonal and regionally oriented. Questions regarding
articles I have written are generally for clarification of some point or
cultivar names and sources. Other questions: How tall does this
grow? Does it grow in sun or shade? I live on Vancouver Island.
For example: In Winter: Q. Which and
shrubs bloom now? A. Christmas Cheer, Erica carnea (winter heaths),
Corellus avellana Contorta (Harry Lauder'sWalking Stick), Daphne mezereum
(fragrant), Hamamelis mollis (Witch Hazel), Viburnum x bodnantense (fragrant),
Garrya elliptica (tassel bush)
Q. When can I start lettuce and other cold weather
crops A. Start lettuce indoors in a small covered box, then transplant to a
larger box in a cool greenhouse. By the time March rolls around, you will
be eating $5.98 lettuce. Sow beans and peas when the soil is no longer
soggy, then pray it does not freeze hard. If it does, replant. Worth
the gamble.
Another question everyone gets : What kind of
perennial can I put in which will be absolutely pest and disease free, bloom all
summer long from spring to late fall, be drought resistant and highly fragrant,
and have good winter colour? A. Plastic.
