Re: Squirrels and cayenne pepper

I've been having a lot of trouble this year with squirrels in my
container plantings, uprooting the plants. I've found that covering the
surface of the soil with small stones deters them. This may be of use for
people who are squeamish about using cayenne. I used cayenne on my crocus
in the spring and saved them from the squirrels who were nipping the
stems, leaving the ground strewn with disembodied blooms. I made up my
own solution - lots of hot chili peppers from a Chinese food store, some
soap, and water and the whole thing just sits in the bottom of the spray
bottle. I've just added water a couple of times. I respray after rain.
Some people have said that it cayenne sprays don't work but all I can say
is that the crocus are beheaded before spraying and they are not beheaded
after spraying. I have not seen any blinded squirrels running around.
