Well, I have to tell this story. And then
duck.
Several months ago ATC did a story about me, though I
wasn't mentioned by name. I missed it, but I was recognizable enough that
several friends called me about it. The story was related by a former
friend of many years, a person who had considerable political differences
with me and had stopped talking to me the day after the Supreme Court decision
that settled the 2000 election. The story had several falsehoods and false
implications that impugned my character. (Maybe that's why I was
recognizable.).
No one at NPR ever contacted me for confirmation or
comment, though it would have been easy to do so. Many of you folks work for
newspapers. What would happen to one of your reporters if he did a story without
bothering to check with the subject of the story? In fact, it probably would
never get past the editor.
Then a couple of years ago NPR read a letter I had
written. They edited out exactly five words, which is probably their right.
But in this case, loss of those words totally reversed the meaning of the letter
from wryly critical of NPR to praising NPR.
These are distortions that I know about
only because I was personally involved. Who knows how much is
warped that I don't even know about. No, I don't have a whole lot of respect for
NPR.
