Re: A Post Of Value And Encouragement - I Hope!

One of our local garden chains co-opted the PAR idea the same year GWA proposed it. I encouraged people to cooperate with them via my column, but never tried to push GWA. I felt the end result was the most important anyway, and as long as food was going to the hungry, that was what mattered. A woman at our local food bank mentioned that they had not had any greens donated, so I grew some Asian greens and donated a bunch of them. Then the Food Bank wanted me to contribute recipes for using the greens. You can grow a ton of some Asian greens in 30 days, but if hungry people are put off by mustardy flavor, it's wasted effort. I'll add to this. I am trying very hard to get stories from PAR participants about their experiences. By that I mean things like grateful reactions from recipients, unusual, touching, funny, thought provoking, or any other adjective that applies, stories. PAR is about to reach it's tenth anniversary and from just a few stories I heard at the GWA symposium, there MUST be more good stories out there. I want desperately to collect such stories and get them into major print to give the PAR program a further boost. I am trying to work out something so that writers will get something for what they contribute, but I hope you will send stories even without absolutely counting on remuneration just so the PAR program can continue to grow.
The late Elwyn Meader, a wonderful plant breeder at the University of New Hampshire, continued to breed and give away new varieties after he retired. Some of them could have brought him a tidy sum, but he said he gave them away as "his payment for his space on the planet." That's the kind of attitude I hope we can generate with PAR - selfless giving.
PLEASE help with this.
