Selling reprinted material
Hi All,
I'm writing the forum today to present two questions that I haven't seen in
posts during the time I've been subscribing to this list....
Somebody may wish to reprint part of an article I wrote some time ago. I'm
just curious: do newspapers typically allow an author whose work has already
been printed to sell that information to another publication? I'm pretty
sure I signed a contract saying that once I submitted the work, it was
theirs (the newspaper's) to reprint/publish on the Web, etc... So I would
need to ask the newspaper for permission to allow another publication to
reprint, no? And then I likely wouldn't be paid for it myself, since it
isn't mine anymore? Are there any etiquette or legal issues I should be
aware of here? If for some reason the paper allowed it, how might I
determine a reasonable fee for a reprint of all of it or a section of it?
Also, the creator of a website may hire me to write a series of articles
which would first appear on the website, then be turned into an e-book on
the subject. He suggested that I consider one of the following two
arrangements: either he pays me a set fee for the work or he pays a smaller
fee up front and then offers me half (or some other percentage) of the
revenue from the e-book's sales over time. Does anyone know of good
resources for determining what is fair and reasonable in such a situation?
Thanks in advance!
Kate Bryant
