I totally agree. I haven't used peat moss in over a
decade. I use ground bark mulch both as a soil amendment and in potting
mixes.
This has nothing to do with whether peat moss is
sustainable or not sustainable. I don't care. Either way, it's horrible stuff. I
think it's one of those things, like a layer of drainage in the bottom of a pot,
that just passes from generation to generation of garden writers without anyone
stopping to say, Hey, wait a minute!
Sustain ability, BTW, is only partly determined by the
amount of time it takes to produce the product. It is the ratio between use and
rejuvenation. It makes no difference if it takes a thousand years to produce a
quantity of peat moss. If that quantity is a thousand year supply, it is
sustainable. For me, compost is not a sustainable commodity. I always run out of
last year's supply half way through this season.
