I've written a couple of columns on Chinese garden products, one on tools and one on terra-cotta.

I have a British carbon steel border fork I paid sixty bucks for and a Chinese stainless steel border fork I bought for half that. I don't know where the British tool is, somewhere out behind the garden shed. And this spring I bought a full sized spading fork, Chinese, stainless steel, a work of art as much as a tool, at Target for twenty bucks. Twenty bucks!

And Chinese terra cotta turns me on better than Viagra. I can literally recognize it blindfolded. It is a great product that ages wonderfully. And at ten percent of the price of comparable Italian products (though their price is crashing under competitive pressure), it means that ordinary gardeners can have large, beautiful, sensuous pots that once were found only at great estates.

Further there are some quite respectable garden tschatskes from China now found in drug stores that were formerly sold only in very upscale garden boutiques.

I can't wait to see what they are doing with live plants.
