RE: lurkers speak out

Title: Message
I did get into it--yesterday. But I posted to the Organic Gardening list and got a message back saying that my message was waiting for the moderator because I wasn't a member. So I sent back a subscribe message and haven't yet heard back.

Anyway, I asked about using compost teas that you make without the brewer. I've been doing that for years--aerating daily and using them for disease prophylactics between 5 and 10 days after setting the compost to soak and nutrient teas after that time. I grew up using compost teas (1940s and 1950s), along with manure teas--they were SOP for my mother and I assume, for other gardeners from a British tradition. It wasn't until Harry Hoyt's (I think that's his name) research at the University of Ohio in the 1980s that I knew that there was a short window of time during which the teas were most effective against diseases. Incidentally, his work also showed that that they worked by inhibiting the germination of many species of fungal spores and, in a few cases, by killing the spores.

I have no doubt that these teas are not as effective as those made with a brewer. However, it'll be awhile before I break down and spend the money for a brewer, so I asked how other people on the list were making and using the teas.

And now--if I read all the emails that have backed up over the last day, I will probably learn that.

Best,

Miranda Smith
