Remember the Hungry
I know most of you are scrambling to get ready for a holiday, the GWA
symposium and article deadlines are looming, plus you are busy in the
garden. But....please harvest your vegetable and fruit gardens in the next
few days--before you leave to go elsewhere---to feed the hungry. This seems
to be the peak of harvest in my part of the country--upper Midwest. I had
been picking about 25 pounds weekly to take to the local Plant a Row for the
Hungry collection point at the farmer's market. However, tonight, I picked
77 pounds of tomatoes, baby eggplants, bush beans and cucumbers--mostly
tomatoes.
Remind your readers, if you write a newspaper column, to clean out their
gardens, too. Don't let the excess harvest go to waste. There are plenty
of hungry who need nutritious vegetables and fruit.
I'll hop off my soapbox now and wish everyone a relaxing Labor Day weekend
and a safe trip to and from Melville, Long Island.
Doreen Howard
