Hi John,

That looks like a great resource.

Does anyone know of any *free*, as in non-copyrighted data sets with
   lists of plant names?

As a researcher and open source software developer I've often been
stymied by the roadblocks that botanic gardens and other institutions
   throw up.

I've wanted to use the RHS color system in computer software, but
RHS doesn't share corresponding RGB values to make that possible.
I could easily create a database of plant names that supports phonetic
spellings, but I need a current list of plants first. The IPNI list
doesn't allow for that without a license.

So... What lists out there are truly free? Do we need to start our
own and just ignore the taxonomists for a while?

Chris
