Dictionary and Thesaurus

For decades the Microsoft Bookshelf CD-ROM in one iteration or another, the

latest being Bookshelf 2000, has sat almost permanently in my D drive with

an easily accessible not-so-bad dictionary and thesaurus. Highlight a word

in any application, click the icon in the Toolbar, and you get a quick

definition or synonym. It's not great depth, but it is, or was, nonetheless

very useful. But recently either the CD has become corrupted or my computer

doesn't like it anymore.

Can anyone recommend an open source dictionary and thesaurus that can be

downloaded to a hard drive that has the easy accessibility of Bookshelf?
