Re: Blurb or other POD options

Hi, Barbara,

Back in February I gave a lecture on print on demand in Boston to the Region
I GWA group. In it I shared my experience gained while producing a small,
colorful book inexpensively. It is called "Citrus: How to Grow and Use
Citrus Fruits, Flowers, and Foliage" by Monica Moran Brandies. It has color
on every page. With POD I have not found a way to have color inserts. It is
either all color or all b and w inside.

Since I have to pay the author a royalty and also have to offer the book at
wholesaler and distributor discounts, the pricing was a challenge. Perhaps
you will have more wiggle room on that. My solution was to use Lightning
Source for my book. It came out at 5.5 x 8.5 inches and 72 pages and is info
packed. I felt that the paper quality could have been better but that it is
good enough. If it were clay finished paper the book's interior would have
more shine. I had looked at Blurb but costs are much higher there.

Here is a link to my handout from Boston.

I have heard good things about Lulu and CreateSpace for individuals, if you
can stay away from unneeded (expensive) services.

If you use any one of these it does not preclude trying another one. You are
the publisher and they are just printing your book.

Be sure to get another pair of eyes to check everything before you go to
print. Mistakes happen! At least with POD they can be fixed more
inexpensively.

This list is so smart -- I hope you can help me out.

I am researching how to self publish a small, full color,
photograph-intensive book -- in
part as a way to test the waters (soft cover) and also perhaps in hardcover.

I do not want to self-finance a run of 500 books sourced through China , but
instead
would prefer to do POD with good quality while keeping costs reasonable.
