Nina, you might talk to Kirk Brown, 610) 530-8752,  kirk@gardendesigninc.com, who is on the GWA board and is the business manager for Joanne Kostecky Design in Allentown PA (www.gardendesigninc.com).  

When we had our last GWA meeting in Philly, we visited several of their company's designs and a number of them had flat screen TVs outdoors. It was the first time I'd seen it.  I had the same reaction as you, but it does seem to be a trend and one they've been involved in for quite some time.
