Is there a better way to transfer photos to Mac?

My Mac stopped recognizing my Canon camera a couple months ago, so I got a
card reader. Now, instead of taking a few minutes to transfer photos, it
takes at least 20 minutes. The card reader seems to tie up the computer so
it can't do anything else, and if I try to read other files, there's a
significant lag time and then it takes that much longer to access the
photos. I have an Iogear card reader ($10-15 range) -- not the cheapest one.

 I was wondering if this is typical for card readers, or if there's
something that will work better with my ca. 6-year-old Mac.
