Perhaps Giant European Hornets?

They took over my figs one year - because they also forage at night there was no opportunity to harvest any - and they can sting severely...I imagine there is a big paper nest where they reside since they spend lots of time girdling branches of lilac and others - in a tree or compost pile - but they will die back in the winter except for the queen who will be searching for new digs in early spring.

Wait for the cold.
