Hi Jim and Mike,
           The reason I suggested trimming the roots on some to see if it
had any effect is that I wonder why root disturbance is said to cause a
spurt in growth. The ones whose roots are trimmed would be more disturbed
than the ones that are carefully repotted, which would still be disturbed
somewhat compared to the ones that were left alone. There would then be
three groups to compare instead of two. If you get three different growth
rates, you'd be on to something.
           The humidity may be significant in terms of how dry they get and
how quickly.
