Cold nights

Well, it looks like the cold is over.
There was ice on the birdbaths this
morning but weather.com says the low
will be 44 tonight with a warming
trend. We had two to four people
working a good part of two days to put
as many plants as we could back into the
cold frames or get them covered. Now
we're way behind on shipping. All the
plants at the retail store had to be
taken off the benches and protected.
Everything in our mail order and
production areas had to be moved or
covered. What we couldn't fit in frames
we covered with remay, and when we ran
out of remay - absolutely none available
at any of the farm supply stores here,
tobacco farmers got it all - we covered
with microfoam, even though it mashes
the tall plants down. With the really
big pots, up to 25 gallon, we covered
with plastic. Those that were way up
had to be turned on their sides to keep
from squashing the foliage. Probably
30,000 plants or so moved or covered.
Eventually we just gave up and left a
lot of stuff to live or die. I'm
getting too old to work like this.

Probably the most frustrating part is
that now that it's over, hopefully
anyway, the plants that we didn't cover
look just fine, standing there all
bright and snappy, saying "What's all
the fuss?"

Now that it's getting warm, all we have
to do is spend a couple days uncovering
everything so it doesn't bake and trying
to get some plants back on the benches
at retail - this weekend is our open
house.

Sometimes these things just drive me
nuts.
