Re: Watering

Maybe some cactus genes should be introduced into the hostas grown in the
southern states......that would of course mean that the leaves would have to
be omitted from the salad bowl !! :-))

| Hi,
| Nature has a way to deal with naturally occurring drought. The plants
simply
| shut down and go heat dormant. Not very good for increase but great for
| survival. Hostas adjust to lack of rain within reason. If you water
heavily,
| weekly, then withholding water during drought periods makes that adjustment
| more difficult and severe, hence start and don't stop. Heat dormancy comes
| on a lot faster if first they get lots of water then none at all. Hosta
that
| get 1 inch of water usually do fine if it is 1 inch per week, after week.
| Get a rain gauge and make up the deficit. Get several gauges because not
| every spot in your garden gets the same amount of rain. Not watering is
| fine if natural rain provides a fair amount of rain. 4-year droughts (as we
| had) are murder on hostas without watering. They are not cacti!
