Re: H. Color Parade

Hi Doug,
I use it any year I can. It will set pods with any of the pollen I
used, which came from numerous plants, making crosses the normal way. If
there is a specific cross you want to make, I would use every flower on it
for that cross, as it will set most pods, but will often average only 1-3
viable seeds per pod when making crosses. I've seen pods mature all season
only to open them and not find any ripe seeds. The seedlings will mostly be
fragrant, but not too many grow reallly well. Some of these may have worse
fertility problems, depending on the other parent. If you are looking at
building breeding lines with it, I'd recommend using something that's very
fertile for the pollen parent, like a sieboldiana.

Ron:
It's 'Fragrant Bouquet', so the flowers bloom a little late in the
morning here, depending on the temperature. It can be late enough to cause
you problems if you want to use it's pollen on something else. The flowers
are very pale lavender and the biggest there are among hybrids. No seedling
I've had from it has yet had flowers as big.

Rich:
'Invincible' has plantagenia in its background too. The exact
cross/crosses are known only to Paul Aden, who never much liked to reveal
his crosses. Maybe someday he will, but I wouldn't count on it. Like
'Fragrant Bouquet', it sets a fair number of pods when you make crosses, but
there are only a few good seeds per pod. The flowers on the crosses I've
made with it as a pod parent are among the best I've seen. They are large,
well-formed, heavily substanced, and always fragrant so far. The only
fragrant plant I know of that gives a lot of seed when used as a pod parent
for crosses is 'Fragrant Blue'.
