Clyde and all,
My Ming Treasure is growing in full sun until 1 in the afternoon. It was
planted as a TC liner last August and grew very little last year. It now has
3 nice divisions and two flower scapes. I water by hand every few days when
I water Aphrodite and plantaginea which are in even more sun. No leaf burn
from the sun. I also have used Peters fert several times(3or4) this season.
I believe the best way to grow hostas large and fast is to grow them in as
much sun as they can take without leaf scorch, water often, use some fert.
and watch out for organic material around the crown which can lead to
Southern Blight.
I read something on the web the other day about Southern Blight I would like
to share.
Southern Blight can be expected to show up about a week after you have 3
days above 95 degrees F. and then get rain or irrigate. These conditions are
perfect for the fungus to start its life cycle. Of course the fungus must be
in your garden in a dormant state to begin with. I also read that Southern
Blight lives on organic material as well as living plant tissue. This may be
why organic mulch and Southern Blight seem to be connected. In my garden
wood chip mulch and Southern Blight do seem to have a relationship.
