Re: var. What it means....


Sorry for disaggreing but the var has a different meaning 
var is used for wild populations that  differ a bit from the main 
population but not sufficiently enough to give it a separate species 
name.  If there are no separate var only the single name is used H. 
kikutii. As soon as a var is found say Hosta kikutii var 
caput-avis then the origanal plant must be named Hosta kikutii var 
kikutii to make a distinction with the new variety
The plants wehave as Hosta plantaginea 'Aphrodite' etc are not 
varieties in the botanical sense but cultivars This can be seen 
easily because, if correct, they are always written between quotation 
marks. With  Hosta 'Aphrodite'  ( a shortened also correct name)it is 
clear it is a cultivar of Hosta plantaginea With  Hosta 'Wide Brim' 
etc the parents are less clear so there only the cultivar name is 
used Hosta ' Wide Brim'.
