Hi, Ray:

I never have checked the soil temperature.  However, I would suggest a 
thermometer that has a long enough stem; so that, you can easily read the 
temperature.  I would venture that a kitchen supply store or a "scientific" 
store in a mall should have what you are looking for at a reasonable price.
