soil


Sorry its not that simple but soil needs porosity. Water must pass through
yet some must be held for the plant. Sandy-loam does grow well under
irrigation but clay soil amended with organic matter does better in all
conditions.
In either case the answer is constantly adding organic matter. It will
cause the sandy soil to hold water and the clay soil to drain.
If you have choice the clay is better.
