I think both have their vices. Clay limits growth of the roots, where sand
drain very rapidly. I have both on my property. What works well for me
when planting, is to make a hole about 3 inches deeper than necessary and
put a couple inches of the cheapest mulch you can find. It gives plenty of
space for roots to grow and also holds moisture, benefitting both sand and
clay plantings.
I have taken plants that are in clay and dug them upslightly, just to
loosen the soil around the roots. I try to keep my beds as loose as
possible, turning them just as you would a vegetable garden.
