Mary, I put two havahart live rabbit traps to catch my rabbits, but these Virginia "mountain" rabbits are smarter than the Delaware ones.
I left the empty havaharts open in Delaware and eventually they would go in with no bait. But not here.
I mousetrapped my first mole (under a pot with peanut butter) - not as many tunnels now, could it be only one did all the damage?

Bruce, It seems that S&S may also be a favorite of rabbits. I only have
about 5 leaves left from a large clump. I carried off a bushel of leaves
that had been cut but left to die. This is my first real problem with
rabbits. I think I may have to buy a gun.

Voles will eat Sum & Substance first, for what ever reasons. I lost some
large clumps growing in a field this way this year.

Sounds like a root problem or voles which will eat the
crowns and cause the plant appear stunted because you
don't have all the crowns. I would think about a root
problem last summer after you lost interest and didn't
notice, causing the plant to not store enough food for
spring.
