registered hosta

Hi All,

I was in on many conversations concerning registration at the
convention. IMO- a plant "comercially ready" should be registered. An
unstable-breeder is not " commercially ready", nor is a new
introduction. If every plant was registered, there would be complete
madness keeping up on the archives. Could you imagine how many varieties
we would have in 5 years.

An unstable-breeder is just that. Why put a name on something that will
probably be a different plant real soon. That is not saying the plant
isn't valuable or shouldn't be sold. People interested in hybridizing
want and need them. Hybridizers are I guess an "elite group". They join
societies, go to auctions and expect to be able to purchase these plants
from top growers. Now, if they (the plants) have to be registered, the
door will be shut for many would be hybridizers.

A new introduction may be growing well on the growers property. So he or
she decides to release it on a limited basis. Most of these are "Hosta
people" who will purchase new introductions. If it is a "piece of shxx"
the word will travel quick. If it is spectacular introduction, by all
means get it registered. Isn't it the responsibility of the hosta
network to screen these plants before being released to the general
population.

Let the introducer decide when it is ready for registration
