| I have been asked to remind everyone that applications for the position of
Registrar for the Genus Hosta are due on April 1, 2001. There has been a change in where to send the applications. The original notice said to send the applications to Jim Wilkins. I have also attempted to embed it at the end of this message but AOL 6.0 has a way of garbling some of these efforts. Contrary to rumors that I have heard, I am NOT an applicant for the position. Walek Position Posting by The American Hosta Society for Registrar, for the Genus Hosta Position Description This position is responsible for annual registration of hosta cultivar epithets (names), development of a checklist of hosta cultivar and cultivar group epithets, and for other tasks identified in the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants 1995 and agreed upon with The American Hosta Society. This individual works under the direction of the Executive Board of the American Hosta Society, which is the registration authority for the genus Hosta. Regular Ongoing Tasks: * Processing of submitted registrations within a one-month period. * Compiling and composing written descriptions of submitted and approved registrations for annual publishing in The Hosta Journal and other periodic publications. * Compile a checklist of all known hosta cultivars for publication (ongoing). * Reviewing hosta-related publications, journals, newsletters, nursery catalogs, etc. for the purpose compiling and amending the checklist and for gathering a general knowledge of hosta cultivars. * Attendance at nomenclature-related conferences and Hosta Society meetings as appropriate. International Registration Authorities (IRAs): http://www.ishs.org/sci/iradirec.htm American Hosta Society: http://www.hosta.org Required Qualifications: * A demonstrated knowledge of plant nomenclature. * Basic proficiency with computer database software. Desired Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in horticulture or related biologic field. * Course work and experience relating to plant nomenclature. * A working knowledge of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants and The International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. * A broad knowledge of hosta cultivars in the nursery trade. Commitment * A part time, ongoing position requiring an average of one 8-hour day once a week year around. * A minimum three-year commitment is desired. Rate of pay and application information This is an unpaid position. It as anticipated that compensation for phone, and other specific overhead will be available. Limited secretarial support may be available on a per/registration basis.
