Here in the UK where we tend to uses hostas in the shade, impatiens are
invaluable. I like 'Super Elfin White' creeping out from under 'Francee'
and 'Super Elfin Pearl', which is blushed white, emerging from under
'Hadspen Heron'.
I've combined annuals with hostas in pots too, and Viola 'Princess Yellow',
with its dark whiskers, trailing out from under 'Halcyon' looked great and
I think Viola 'Sorbet Yellow Frost', a pale blue and primrose bicolour,
might also look good.
Finally, of three? Here's an idea - for where there's enough sun. Try
planting lobelia amongst hostas - but not the little bushy ones. Use
trailing lobelia which develops a much more open and airy habit of growth
and fits in better. The Regatta Series is best, and 'Regatta Blue Splash',
a blue and white bicolour is great with blue hostas, while 'Regatta White'
is good with hostas whose leaves are in the yellow/charteuse range.
