Ammonia used to induce variegation...???

Rumor has it that ammonia has been used to induce variegation in hostas. On a
cultivar called, 'Painted Lady'  I believe it was. Can anyone supply specifics
about concentrations, timing, exposure etc.. Are there any documents existing
regarding use of ammonia on dicots?.
