Jim Hawes was one great fellow. Lu and I stopped by and spent a couple of
hours with him on our way to the DC Hosta Convention this past June. Jim was
not doing well then and he told us he didn't have long. He told us his
prostrate cancer had spread to three places near his spine and had spread to
other parts of his body. He had been fighting this cancer for at least 3 or 4
years.
Jim worked with plants his whole life. Jim Hawes was a wonderful teacher and
would gladly take his time answering questions from people who didn't have his
level of knowledge. Jim was never condescending and was always patient with
those who asked "stupid" questions.
I would bet everyone who has ever talked hosta science with Jim Hawes came
away from the conversation with a great deal of respect for Jim. A great deal
of respect and the feeling that you had a good friend.
That was Jim Hawes.
We all miss you Jim.
