Creating SHADE

What kind of suggestions has anyone got for creating more shade
areas for hostas, or partial shade areas? Has anyone tried putting vines
(such as virgina creeper) on wooden rose harbors or fences to create shade?
Maple trees and similar trees, seem to have big root systems. I
also have an inground pool, so any trees must have a small root system.
My Briard (my shaggy-haired french sheepdog), also needs more shady areas.
