Hi Charles
all pollen grains even from a single anther are genetically different
just as are all egg cells .What you have noted as silk ( = pistil) is
not that but probably the 'umbilical cord' or funiculus. Look for
further details about the seeds of hosta in my article about seed
germination( 1999 vol 30-2)
