I might be wrong but I believe that when the plant is going dormant, the plant sugars and other stuff in the leaves go back into the crown, to fortify it over the dormant period. Isn't this why you should leave bulb leaves on until they are discolored?

I am debating about cutting my Hostas down now, while the weather is supposed
to be warm, or wait another week or two - if the weather permits - before a
really hard killer frost. In other words, I would rather not be working in the
garden when it is really cold - as it will be in a week or two.
1) Does the hosta plant benefit much from additional week of having it's
leaves?
2) What are the leaves doing for the plant this late time of the season?
Thanks much.
