Hi Everybody,
I just
heard that one of the talks at this year's Hosta in Focus will be from Janet
Mills, who will be giving a tutorial on how to work on hosta pictures on the
computer to make them look their best. Janet is the person who does this work
for the Hosta Journal. I think this will be her first talk anywhere.
This will be the only chance we have to listen to somebody who does this
kind of work for a living tell us some of the ins and outs. If there is a
pro at working on hosta pictures, it's Janet. She will teach everyone some of
the trickier things like removing slug holes and even labels from the picture,
as well as how to work on them to get better prints afterward. Should be really
interesting for all who like hosta photos.
I've
been to every Hosta in Focus since it began and liked every one. If you can make
it, you won't be disappointed. One thing I would recommend is to come Friday as
it's a great chance to spend some time before the meeting with some of the
eastern folks like Bob Solberg, Warren Pollock, and the inimitable Kevin
himself. Also attending will be Mike Shadrack, Carol Brashear, and just possibly
Alex Summers, the man who founded the AHS and pioneered much of what we now take
for granted.
I
visited Alex last Sunday and he is doing well. For those who don't know, this
has been a rough year for him with the loss of his beloved wife Gene,
knee-replacements on both knees, and cataract surgery on both eyes. When we were
discussing a new hosta that he didn't like he said "Just so they don't name it
after me". I pointed out that we've already named pretty much everything we
could after him, Gene, his garden, and his dogs, and that he had even named
some plants after his old cars. He said something like "Humphh!".
If
you're out there Kevin, Who else will be speaking? What else can we expect this
year?

p.s. For those who might be
apprehensive, the hotel is about a half hour away from Washington, so there is
nothing to worry about there.
