[IGS] container question

Greetings:

I'm pondering the use of a metal container as a miniature alpine garden that
will include small hardy geraniums. The depth is 5 inches. Will this be
sufficient to overwinter plants where temperatures can get to minus 20?

Width is near 3 feet ; length 4 feet.

Another question: Will the container, to be situated in full sun, heat up in
the summer to cause problems for the plants? (The container could be moved
to a part-shade position but would look best in the sunny spot.)
