Root zone heating does indeed help a lot of things to root.  Since you're
starting over, you might also want to look at some of the african violet
relatives.  I'm particularly fond of Episcia, "hanging african  violet",
and Nematanthus, goldfish plant and its relatives.  (Sometimes its nice
to have a good clear-out so you get to try new things, she sez in her
best Pollyanna voice).  <vbg>
